Lab Series L2
Honestly, I rescued this from a skip! Complete with the original covers. The main fault was the spade connectors to the speaker. I went through the amp cleaning all the contacts and re-tensioning the spades. One of the can transistors showed signs of overheating and this was due to a loose heat sink. A spot of silicone and heat sink compound and tightening the clip and all was well for a year or two.
One day I switched it on and it started to hum. This went away when I thumped the top, but there were intermittent crackles indicating something was loose. These are difficult to diagnose and I spent quite a while scratching my head. In the end I turned off the lights and tapped around with a wooden stick. I noticed sparks!
The problem was 4 dry joints where the power transistor boards were connected to the pcb (3rd picture). This was a factory fault, and was probably why it was thrown out. Once these were re-soldered it was fine again.
The schematic and layout diagrams for these are excellent and there are some good service notes to set the trim pots for the compressor and pre-amp gain. Great quality components, especially the main smoothing cans. I love the Moog name on the preamp board, and especially the BB King tone!
